Kenyans Warned About New Respiratory Virus Reported in China.

Nairobi, Kenya – The Ministry of Health, through Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni, has issued a warning to Kenyans regarding a new respiratory virus reported in China. The virus, which has been likened to the Coronavirus, has raised concerns worldwide, especially among individuals suffering from respiratory diseases.

During a recent press briefing, PS Muthoni emphasized the importance of vigilance and adherence to public health practices. “We are at a higher risk than ever before,” she stated, urging Kenyans to maintain hand hygiene and practice respiratory etiquette. The Ministry has also advised individuals experiencing unusual or severe respiratory symptoms to seek medical assistance promptly.

The virus, known as Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), was first recorded in 2001 in the Netherlands and spreads through direct contact with infected individuals or by touching contaminated surfaces. Despite its resurgence in China, the Ministry of Health has confirmed that there are no reported cases in Kenya at this time.

The Ministry continues to monitor the situation closely and has put 12 counties on high alert, including Nairobi, Nakuru, Mombasa, and others. PS Muthoni also highlighted the role of sexual transmission in the spread of the virus and called for responsible behavior.

In addition to addressing the new virus, the Ministry of Health is also dealing with a surge in Mpox infections across the country. As of now, Kenya has recorded 31 Mpox cases, with 28 recoveries and one death. The Ministry is conducting contact tracing efforts and has intensified surveillance at borders and key towns.

The Ministry of Health reassures Kenyans that they are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens and encourages everyone to stay informed and follow public health guidelines.
