A protest in Maai Mahiu, Kenya, turned violent, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. The demonstration began when local herders blocked the Narok-Maai Mahiu highway at Duka Moja, demanding Sh3 million in compensation after over 30 sheep were killed by a speeding vehicle on Thursday night.
The situation escalated when police officers, led by Sub-County Police Commander Samson Thuranira, arrived to restore order. Despite attempts to mediate, the crowd refused to clear the road, leading to a confrontation. Police fired ten rounds of blank bullets and ten tear gas canisters to disperse the protesters. During the chaos, one police officer lost his arm, and several others were injured. Tragically, one protester was killed, and multiple civilians were hurt.
The incident caused significant disruption, with traffic being paralyzed for hours and travelers being attacked and inconvenienced by the demonstrators. The police have urged residents to maintain law and order to prevent such incidents in the future.
