
Bob Munro, the founder of Mathare United FC and the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA), passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at his home in Westlands, Nairobi.
Munro, affectionately known as “Bob” in Kenyan football circles, had been battling respiratory issues for the past six months. His death was announced by Mathare United FC and confirmed by his wife, Ingrid Munro.
President William Ruto described Munro as a “pillar of Kenyan sports” and praised his contributions to youth development and grassroots football. The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president, Hussein Mohammed, also paid tribute to Munro, calling him a selfless leader who played a critical role in professionalizing the Kenya Premier League (KPL).
Munro’s legacy includes building Mathare United into one of Kenya’s most iconic football clubs and earning national recognition for his efforts. He was honored with the Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear (EBS) during Kenya’s 60th Jamhuri Day celebrations.
