Over 60 students from Kalyet Secondary School in Kericho County were rushed to Londiani Sub-County Hospital after experiencing severe stomach pains, vomiting, and diarrhea. The students had consumed a traditional Kenyan dish called githeri, a mixture of maize and beans, during lunch on Sunday 26,2025.
The first group of 47 students, including 38 girls and 9 boys, was brought to the hospital early Monday morning. The symptoms persisted overnight, prompting the school principal and some parents to seek medical help. The hospital staff worked diligently to treat the students, administering medications such as antibiotics and fluids.
Dr. Collins Kipkoech, the medical superintendent at Londiani Sub-County Hospital, confirmed that all the students were stabilized and are recovering well. However, he also expressed concerns about the hospital’s capacity to handle such mass incidents, urging for assistance in expanding the facility.
This incident follows another food poisoning case earlier in the month, where 73 people, including children, were hospitalized after consuming contaminated fermented milk, known as mursik, during a church graduation ceremony. Foodborne illnesses remain a significant challenge in the region, with similar incidents reported in the past.
Local leaders and officials from the Kenya Red Cross have responded to the situation, providing support to the affected students and their families. Parents and community members have called for stricter hygiene standards in schools to prevent future occurrences.
