Kajiado County Governor Among Eleven Governors Under EACC Probe for Loss of Over Sh6.3 Billion.

Kajiado county governor Joseph Ole Lenku.

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) revealed that Kajiado Governor and ten other governors are under investigation for the alleged misappropriation of over Sh6.3 billion. The EACC’s annual status report for the 2023/2024 financial year highlighted various financial malpractices, including procurement irregularities, the use of proxies, and conflicts of interest.

Kajiado County is the most affected, with the commission probing a loss of Sh2.2 billion between 2013/2014 and 2022/2023. The investigation focuses on senior county officials who allegedly failed to declare conflicts of interest when awarding tenders to companies associated with them.

Other counties under investigation include Wajir, Marsabit, West Pokot, Migori, Nairobi City, and Vihiga. Each of these counties faces allegations of financial mismanagement, with varying amounts of public funds reportedly lost due to corrupt practices.

EACC Chairperson David Oginde emphasized the need for stronger legal frameworks to address challenges that impede effective anti-corruption interventions. He called for the enactment of conflict of interest legislation to enhance transparency and accountability in the public sector.

The ongoing investigations by the EACC aim to hold accountable those responsible for the misuse of public funds and to restore integrity in county governance. The commission’s efforts underscore the importance of addressing corruption to ensure that public resources are used for the benefit of all citizens.
