On February 6, 2025, the Nakuru High Court declined to issue further orders in the case involving the disappearance of Brian Odhiambo, a local fisherman, allegedly at the hands of Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers. The court’s decision comes amid ongoing protests and demands for accountability from residents and human rights groups.
Brian Odhiambo, 31, was reportedly arrested by KWS officers on January 18, 2025, for allegedly trespassing into Lake Nakuru National Park. He has not been seen since, leading to widespread unrest and demonstrations in Nakuru City. The Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU) filed a petition urging the court to compel the DCI and KWS to produce Odhiambo in court.
During the court proceedings, Nakuru East DCI boss Samuel Ngeiywa and KWS officials claimed they were unable to comply with the court’s directive, citing that Odhiambo was not booked in any police station and that he allegedly escaped before being processed. The court, however, did not issue any further orders, leaving the case in a state of uncertainty.
The decision has sparked mixed reactions, with human rights activists and local leaders calling for continued pressure on the authorities to uncover the truth behind Odhiambo’s disappearance. The case has also raised concerns about the conduct of KWS officers and the need for greater accountability in handling such incidents.
As the search for answers continues, the community remains vigilant, demanding justice for Brian Odhiambo and hoping for a resolution that brings closure to his family and the people of Nakuru
