Final Salute to Kenyan Officer Killed in Haiti’s Line of Duty

Today, March 19, 2025, the late Police Constable Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai was laid to rest at his family home in Naserian, Kajiado County. Kaetuai, who tragically lost his life during a peacekeeping mission in Haiti, was honored in a solemn ceremony attended by family, friends, and dignitaries, including prominent political leaders.

Kaetuai was part of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti, where he was fatally shot on February 23, 2025, during an operation targeting armed gangs in the Western Artibonite region. His death marked the first casualty among the Kenyan contingent deployed to assist in stabilizing the Caribbean nation, which has been grappling with escalating gang violence.

The ceremony was attended by notable leaders, including Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Democratic Action Party leader Eugene Wamalwa, and Inspector General of the National Police Service Douglas Kanja. Other dignitaries present included Senator Peris Tobiko, Deputy Governor Martin Moshisho ,State House Controller Dr. Katoo Ole Metito, and NPSC Commissioner John Ole Moyaki. These leaders paid their respects and expressed their condolences to the family, recognizing Kaetuai’s bravery and dedication to global peace.

Kaetuai was remembered as a dedicated officer and a hero who gave his life in the line of duty. His family expressed their grief but also their pride in his service to global peace.

The peacekeeping mission in Haiti, which began in June 2024, has faced numerous challenges, including limited resources and the dangerous environment posed by gang-controlled areas. Despite these obstacles, Kenya has committed to supporting the mission, deploying 800 officers to aid in restoring order.

Kaetuai’s sacrifice highlights the risks faced by peacekeepers worldwide and underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing global security challenges. His legacy will live on as a symbol of courage and dedication to the cause of peace.
