In a devastating incident that has left the community in shock, a lightning strike in Kajiado County claimed the lives of 36 goats and sheep on Thursday. The livestock, belonging to Martin Partimo of Oltiaska village in Imbirikani/Eserenkei Ward, were struck during a heavy storm. The animals were grazing near their homestead when the tragedy occurred, leaving the family reeling from the sudden loss.

This incident highlights the growing concerns among residents as heavy rains continue to sweep through the region. The unpredictable weather has brought with it not only much-needed rainfall but also dangerous thunderstorms, posing risks to both humans and animals.

Deputy Governor Martin Moshisho visited the affected family to offer his condolences and support. During his visit, he emphasized the importance of taking precautions during storms. “We are deeply saddened by this loss,” he said. “I urge all residents to stay vigilant and avoid open fields during thunderstorms. Let us prioritize safety as we navigate this challenging weather.”

The economic impact of such incidents is significant, particularly for pastoralist families who rely on livestock for their livelihood. In areas like Oltiaska, livestock is not just a source of income but a way of life, making such losses deeply personal and economically devastating.

Meteorological officials have warned of continued heavy rains and thunderstorms in the coming days. Residents are being urged to stay indoors during storms and avoid areas prone to lightning strikes. Local leaders are also working to raise awareness about lightning safety and exploring long-term solutions, such as community shelters and early warning systems, to mitigate future risk.
