Police Chief Orders Transfer and Investigations After Angata Barrikoi Killings

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has taken decisive action following the tragic events in Ang’ata Barrikoi, Narok County, where violent clashes led to the deaths of five civilians. The incident, which occurred during a contentious land demarcation exercise, has sparked national outrage and calls for accountability.

In response, IG Kanja has ordered the immediate transfer of senior police officers, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer and the General Service Unit Commander stationed in the area. This move aims to restore calm and ensure impartial investigations. Additionally, a team of investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters in Nairobi has been dispatched to uncover the truth behind the incident. Kanja emphasized that any officer found culpable will face the full extent of the law.

The killings have drawn widespread condemnation from political leaders and the public alike. Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot described the incident as “aimless shooting” and demanded swift justice for the victims, including an eight-year-old boy. Local leaders have also criticized the ongoing land demarcation process, citing unresolved historical land injustices and court rulings that have fueled tensions.

During a tense peace meeting with residents on Tuesday at Angata Barrikoi Primary school, IG Kanja assured the community of justice and urged them to reopen roads that had been blocked in protest. He reiterated that no one is above the law and pledged to hold all responsible parties accountable. The incident has highlighted the need for a lasting resolution to the land disputes in the region, which have been a source of persistent insecurity.
