Police Detain Six in Connection to Slain Catholic Priest; Banditry Ruled Out

 

Authorities in Elgeyo Marakwet have arrested six suspects in connection with the brutal killing of Reverend Father Allois Cheruiyot Bett of St. Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish. The tragic incident occurred on May 22, 2025, in Mokoro Location, Kakiptul Sub-Location, Kabartile Village, shortly after the priest had concluded a Jumuiya (small Christian community) mass in Kakbiken village.

According to police reports, Father Bett was ambushed and fatally shot at around 2:30 p.m. while traveling back to Tot with a catechist, who is now missing. The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed that officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) responded swiftly to the scene and launched a manhunt, leading to the arrest of six suspects.

Police spokesman Muchiri Nyaga stated that initial investigations indicate the killing was not linked to cattle rustling or ongoing banditry, which have plagued parts of the North Rift region. “This was a targeted act of violence, and we are treating it with the seriousness it deserves,” Nyaga emphasized.

The National Police Service condemned the attack, describing it as a “heinous act” and pledged to carry out thorough investigations to bring all perpetrators to justice. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement officers by providing any relevant information that may assist in the investigation.

The fate of the missing catechist remains unknown, and search efforts are ongoing. Meanwhile, the Catholic community and local leaders have expressed their grief over the loss of Father Bett, remembering him as a dedicated servant of the church and a pillar of the community.
