Kimananga village was struck by tragedy following the drowning of a 16-year-old student, Brendah Chelangat, at a local water pan. Area Chief Julius Lngat reported the incident, prompting an immediate response from police officers and local authorities.
According to preliminary investigations, Brendah, a Form Two student at Kapoleseroi Secondary School, attended classes on Friday, May 23, but did not return home that evening. Concerned about her whereabouts, her grandmother visited the school the following day and confirmed her presence during school hours. However, she once again failed to arrive home that night.

On Sunday, May 25, Brendah’s father, Daniel Chepkwony, discovered her belongings—books, socks, and a tie—approximately 50 meters from their home compound, deepening concerns about her disappearance. The situation escalated when, on Monday, May 26, local resident Nicholas Cheruiyot noticed a pair of sandals floating on the water and alerted the area chief.
Upon reaching the scene, authorities retrieved Brendah’s body, marking the devastating conclusion of a search effort that had left the family and community in distress. The deceased was transported to Longisa Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to clarify the cause of death.
Bomet County Police Commander Edward Imbwaga confirmed the incident, as investigations continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding Brendah’s untimely passing. The community mourns her loss, as authorities urge residents to exercise caution near water bodies to prevent similar tragedies.
