In the quiet village of Ngwasi, nestled within Syokisinga Sub-location in Yatta, Machakos County, grief hangs heavy in the air. A routine trip to fetch water from the River Athi turned fatal when a young man was unexpectedly attacked by a hippopotamus, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
According to eyewitness accounts, the man had ventured to the river with a friend, unaware of the danger lurking beneath the surface. While navigating the rocky riverbank, he inadvertently stepped on a hippo that had been resting just below the water. Startled, the massive animal reacted violently, mauling the man before help could arrive.

His companion, who remained on the riverbank, screamed for assistance as the attack unfolded. Though the victim was rushed to Kitui Hospital in critical condition, he tragically succumbed to his injuries before reaching the facility. His body was later transferred to Machakos Hospital mortuary, awaiting identification by family members.
The incident has reignited concerns about human-wildlife conflict in the region. Residents living near River Athi have long been cautioned about the presence of hippos, especially during evening hours when the animals are more active. Wildlife officials have previously warned that hippos, particularly mothers with calves, can be extremely aggressive if provoked.
