KWS Eliminates Elephant After Fatal Attack in Kajiado West

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has eliminated an elephant in Kajiado West following a fatal attack on 22 December 2025. The incident claimed the life of Eunice Odupoi, a 35‑year‑old Early Childhood Development teacher, who was trampled near her home in Ilailupa Village, Oloodokilani Location. Her death shocked the community, as she was known to be the sole breadwinner for her household.

KWS rangers tracked down and put down the elephant after declaring it a danger to the public. Amboseli Conservation Area Chief Park Warden, Joel Ole Nyika, confirmed the operation, explaining that the decision was made after a professional assessment. He emphasized that the move was carried out strictly under wildlife management protocols, with the protection of human lives taking priority.

The action, however, has sparked criticism from local leaders. Kajiado Woman Representative Leah Sankaire, together with other county officials, condemned the killing of the elephant. They argued that KWS should explore alternatives such as relocating elephants that stray close to residential areas instead of resorting to lethal measures. Sankaire further appealed to KWS to expedite compensation for Odupoi’s family, stressing that her death left the household vulnerable.

She also called for proactive strategies to reduce human–wildlife conflict in the region, noting that communities living near conservation areas continue to face risks from roaming wildlife. The tragedy has reignited debate over how best to balance wildlife protection with the safety and livelihoods of local residents.
