On January 16, 2025, during a public meeting, Kajiado North Subcounty Administrator Samuel Muchiri expressed his concerns about the increasing presence of bars near schools. The meeting, held in Ongata Rongai, gathered local residents, educators, and law enforcement officers to discuss the pressing issue and seek solutions.
Mr. Muchiri highlighted the adverse effects of alcohol establishments on the safety and well-being of students. He stressed that the proximity of bars to schools poses a risk to the younger generation, exposing them to inappropriate behavior and potential substance abuse. “Children are the future of our community, and it is our responsibility to protect them from harmful influences,” Muchiri stated passionately.
During the meeting, several parents voiced their worries about the negative impact these bars have on their children’s education and discipline. Echoing their sentiments, educators noted that students who pass by these establishments on their way to and from school are often distracted and tempted by the dangers they represent.
In response to these concerns, Mr. Muchiri outlined a comprehensive plan to address the issue. This includes stricter enforcement of existing regulations, increased patrols by law enforcement, and collaboration with the local community to ensure bars adhere to zoning laws. He also called for a review of current policies to ensure that no new licenses for bars are issued within a certain radius of schools.
Local law enforcement officers present at the meeting pledged their support to Mr. Muchiri’s initiative. They assured the community that they would work diligently to close down establishments that violate the regulations and compromise the safety of students.
With steadfast determination, Samuel Muchiri concluded the meeting by urging the community to remain vigilant and report any violations. He emphasized that collective efforts are necessary to create a safe and conducive environment for the education and growth of the youth in Kajiado North.
