Chief Justice Martha Koome’s security detail has been withdrawn, sparking significant concern and controversy. The move has been described by Koome as unconstitutional executive interference, threatening judicial independence and public trust in state institutions. In a letter to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Koome emphasized that this action sets a dangerous precedent, suggesting that key constitutional offices can be undermined through external pressure.

Koome also expressed concern over the downsizing of the Judiciary Police Unit, which she believes weakens security for judicial officers and infrastructure nationwide. She has called for the immediate restoration of her security detail, stressing that judicial independence is vital to safeguarding constitutional democracy.

The withdrawal of Koome’s security detail has triggered tension between the Judiciary and the Executive, with Koome urging Kenyans and civil society to remain vigilant in protecting the Judiciary. She stated that no amount of intimidation would deter the Judiciary from fulfilling its constitutional mandate.

This development has raised questions about the balance of power between the different arms of government in Kenya and the importance of maintaining judicial independence to ensure the effective administration of justice.
