Tragic incidents involving suspected suicides have been reported in different locations within Bomet County, shedding light on the need for comprehensive mental health support in the region.
The first case occurred in Lelboinet village, Kipajit sub-location, as reported by Assistant Chief Geoffrey Mutai. The deceased, Joseph Tele, aged 71, was tragically found hanging from a tree with a rope around his neck. Officers from Sotic Police Station who visited the scene confirmed that Joseph had left his house early in the morning around 5:00 AM to milk his cows but never returned. His wife, Cicilla Tele, became aware of his absence when the milk collector arrived and could not locate him. Upon investigation, the body showed no signs of physical injury. It was subsequently moved to Kapkaket Sub-County Morgue, where it awaits further examination and investigation.
The second incident took place in Cheleget location, Chepkosa sub-location. Assistant Chief Paul Ngeno reported the case of Emily Chebet, aged 51, who was found hanging in an abandoned house within her parents’ homestead. Unlike the first incident, no suicide note was recovered at the scene. Chepalungu Police officers documented the case, and her body was transferred to Longisa County Referral Hospital Mortuary for preservation and an impending autopsy.
Both cases were confirmed by Edward Imbwaga, Bomet County Police Commander, on March 30, 2025. These tragic events highlight the importance of addressing mental health challenges within communities and fostering open dialogue about mental well-being.
