Grisly Multi- Vehicle Crash Claims Five Lives near Gilgil

A devastating multi-vehicle accident claimed the lives of five individuals, including an infant, on Monday evening along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway near the Mbaruk area in Gilgil. The crash, which occurred around 6:30 PM, involved a private Toyota Fielder, a saloon car, and a trailer.

According to Nakuru County Traffic Enforcement Officer Allan Ogolla, the driver of the Toyota Fielder was attempting to overtake a fleet of vehicles on the single-lane highway when the car collided head-on with an oncoming saloon car. The impact caused the Fielder to veer off course and crash into a trailer, resulting in a fiery wreck that left the vehicle extensively damaged.

All five occupants of the Toyota Fielder—two men, two women, and an infant—died instantly. Authorities suspect the victims may have been members of the same family.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene, battling flames and twisted metal to retrieve the victims. The accident triggered a major traffic snarl-up, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes as police worked to clear the wreckage and restore order.

The bodies were transported to Nakuru City Mortuary for identification and preservation, while investigations into the cause of the crash continue.

Residents of Gilgil and surrounding areas have repeatedly voiced concerns over the safety of the Nakuru-Eldoret highway, citing poor road conditions and frequent accidents. Despite government assurances to begin expansion works on the highway, no visible progress has been made, fueling public frustration.
