The quiet village of Ngiriambu in Kirinyaga East sub-county was thrust into mourning after the tragic discovery of Jackline Ruguru, a 22-year-old student at Embu University, whose decomposed body was found in a coffee plantation. Ruguru had been missing for a week, and her death has left her family, friends, and the wider community grappling with grief and unanswered questions.
The discovery was made when villagers noticed dogs circling the plantation, prompting one resident to investigate. What followed was a chilling scene: Ruguru’s remains lay hidden among the coffee bushes, bearing signs of brutal violence. Witnesses reported that her head appeared disfigured, possibly from acid burns, and one of her arms was missing. The disturbing condition of the body suggested that she had been subjected to a vicious attack, sparking fear and outrage among locals.
Ruguru’s disappearance had been reported on Sunday, November 16, after she returned home from college. According to her family, she had gone shopping in Kiamutugu town but never came back. Friends described her as cheerful and close to her parents, with no indication of distress before she vanished. Her sudden disappearance and the grim discovery of her body have left her loved ones devastated.
As news spread, residents gathered at the scene, joined by local leaders and police officers. The community expressed shock at the brutality of the killing, with many demanding swift justice. Ruguru’s father, overwhelmed by grief, was reportedly unable to visit the site where his daughter’s body was found.
Kirinyaga East Sub-County Police Commander Wachira Mukuha confirmed the incident and assured the public that investigations had been launched.
“We have launched investigations into the matter. The body has been taken to Kerugoya Hospital mortuary for preservation and postmortem. We are treating this as a suspected murder, and we will pursue all leads to ensure justice is served,” Mukuha said.
He urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with detectives by sharing any information that could help unravel the circumstances of Ruguru’s death.
