HOMA BAY, Kenya — A tragic road accident on Sunday night claimed the lives of ten wedding guests along the Sondu–Oyugis Road in Homa Bay County, plunging families into mourning after a day of celebration.
The victims were traveling in a Nissan matatu after attending a wedding in Kakamega County, heading towards Nyamira County. Around 8 p.m. near Chabera Trading Centre in Rachuonyo East Sub-County, their matatu collided head-on with a lorry. Six women and four men, including the matatu driver, died instantly, while six other passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospitals for treatment.
Authorities confirmed that the bodies of the deceased were moved to Oyugis Level Four Hospital mortuary, where families are expected to identify their loved ones before burial arrangements begin.

Rachuonyo East Sub-County Police Commander Laban Omol reported that the lorry driver lost control and strayed into the matatu’s lane, leading to the deadly collision. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether speeding or mechanical failure contributed to the crash.
