Three KDF Recruits Die During Training Exercise in Eldoret

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has confirmed the deaths of three recruits who developed medical complications while undergoing a routine endurance drill at the Defence Forces Recruits Training School (DFRTS) in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

According to a statement issued on Friday, the incident occurred on January 29, 2026, during a scheduled training session.

KDF explained that the recruits became unwell mid-exercise, prompting immediate medical intervention by the facility’s health personnel. They were later transferred to Eldoret Regional Hospital for specialized treatment but were pronounced dead despite efforts by doctors to save them.

The military described the loss as tragic and extended condolences to the families, colleagues, and fellow recruits of the deceased. It further noted that the next of kin had already been informed and that support mechanisms had been put in place to assist the grieving families.

In its statement, KDF emphasized that a formal investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The findings, it said, will guide any adjustments needed to strengthen safety and welfare measures for recruits in training.

Despite the tragedy, KDF reiterated its commitment to upholding strict safety standards across all its training institutions.
