A tragic incident occurred at the Titanic Dam in Kiambu County, claiming the lives of two students from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) on March 2,2025. The victims, identified as Abel Ontuga Mikaye and Dansteph Matoke, were enjoying a day out at the popular recreational spot when the unfortunate event took place.
The Titanic Dam, located in the Mugutha area of Juja sub-county, is a well-known “park and chill” spot frequented by outdoor enthusiasts. Despite its scenic beauty, the area has a history of accidents, making it particularly dangerous. Motorists often park on a slope overlooking the water to enjoy the view, increasing the risk of mishaps.
According to eyewitnesses, the two students were swimming in the dam when they encountered difficulties and drowned. Despite rescue efforts by local residents, the students could not be saved. The bodies were retrieved by Kiambu County divers and transported to the General Kago Funeral Home for post-mortem examinations to determine the exact cause of death.
Central Sub-County Police Commander Doris Kimeli confirmed the incident and issued a stern warning to the public. She emphasized the need for caution when visiting the dam, noting that this was not the first time such a tragedy had occurred. In January 2023, a similar incident claimed the lives of a man and a woman after their car plunged into the dam.
Commander Kimeli urged visitors to prioritize safety and adhere to guidelines when engaging in recreational activities at the dam. She also mentioned that investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the drowning and to determine if any safety measures were in place at the time.
